Live from Music Row Wednesday morning on The Tennessee Star Report with Michael Patrick Leahy – broadcast on Nashville’s Talk Radio 98.3 and 1510 WLAC weekdays from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. – host Leahy welcomed the original all-star panelist Crom Carmichael to the studio for another edition of Crom’s Commentary.

I have been reading a book called 1620, which is the response to The 1619 Project or it’s a book that responds to it. And there’s a very interesting quote in here because The 1619 Project claims that Abraham Lincoln was racist. And here’s an interesting quote that Abraham Lincoln gave in a speech in 1854.
And a lot of the themes in it are for today.
“Slavery is found in the selfishness of man’s nature, opposition to it, in his love of justice. These principles are in an eternal antagonism. And when brought into collision so fiercely as slavery’s extension brings them, shocks and throws and convulsions must ceaselessly follow. Repeal the Missouri Compromise. Repeal all compromises. Repeal the Declaration of Independence. Repeal all past history. You still cannot repeal human nature. It still will be in the abundance of man’s hearts that slavery’s extension is wrong. And out of that abundance of his heart, his mouth will continue to speak.”
Now, the key takeaway from that really is what Lincoln is talking about in man’s nature. And our Constitution and the founding of our country took into account the notion that it doesn’t take but a few bad people to rule an otherwise good people.
Our Constitution was set up with checks and balances. Our Constitution and our national government was voted into place by the states, not the other way around. For today these are small things but back then they were huge.
And they should be large today if history is taught properly. Our national government was constituted when it was given certain powers and the rest of those powers were limited.
Because at the time that that happened those principles are still accurate today, man’s nature is not good when it comes to power.
Most people do not seek great power. But it doesn’t take but a few. Two percent of the population, if armed and the rest of the population is not armed, two percent can easily subdue and control the other 98 percent and take away their freedoms.
And the history of the world, by the way, shows that we in this country set up our country to empower the people against the government.
And what we’re seeing now is a Democratic Party that is the party of power and is the party of government elucidating the bad nature of some human beings.
